I reported about problems I am having with my Asus notebook yesterday. I recieved an Email answer from the Asus support team today, which was rather disappointing for two reasons, the first disappointment was the answer itself, the second disappointment was that the rating link, which was included in the email did not work, so that I could not even rate the appalling anser the support technician gave me.
Here is the abstract of what I wrote to the support in German (sorry lads, I just translated the overall list for you)
Ich verwende Debian sid (kernel 2.6.18) auf meinem Notebook, das Touchpad funktioniert unter
Linux garnicht (was eigentlich nicht ihr Problem ist). Die ati (x700) Graphikkarte funktioniert
nur wenn ich acpi ausstelle oder der Laptop nicht via Netzstecker Strom bezieht (FGLRX und
OpenSource treiber versucht!).
Das sind alles Sachen mit denen ich bisher leben konnte, aber nun Streikt der USB hub unter Linux,
meine Maus spinnt total, einfacher klick wird zb als doppelklick erkannt, unter Windows
treten die Fehler allerdings nicht auf, deshalb habe ich mein System nochmal formatiert und neu
Aufgesetzt, ohne Erfolg. Hab ausserdem 4 Mäuse an dem Gerät unter Linux getestet um
Fehlerquellen auszuschliessen muss definitiv was mit dem Gerät sein.
Ausserdem erreicht das Gerät unter Windows und Linux unglaubliche Temperaturen und macht
krach wie ein Desktop Pc (auch wenn ich die CPU Geschwindigkeit auf ~800mhz runterschraube).
Das Plastikgitter des hinteren rechten Kühlers wirkt “purös”, eine Strebe ist durchgebrochen, ein paar
andere wackeln ein wenig (nehme an dass das eventl. auf die konstante Hitze
zurückzuführen ist, ich könnte auf dem Laoptop Eier braten.)
Für mich ist MS Windows KEINE OPTION. Ein Gerät sollte meiner Meinung nach unter allen
Betriebssystemen einwandfrei funktionieren und das war bei ihrem Produkt von Anfang an nicht der
Fall (es wird auch nicht darauf hingewiesen dass das Notebook unter Linux nicht wirklich funktioniert),
da es nun so weit ist dass ich nichmal mehr ohne Probleme arbeiten kann, würde ich das Gerät gerne
zu Reperatur abgeben, oder mich von ihnen beraten lassen (wie gesagt die anderen Mängel sind
nebensächlich aber meine Maus
brauche ich, da das Touchpad nicht funktioniert).
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:
- Touchpad (kein support unter Linux)
- Graphicsadapter, funktioniert nur wenn acpi disabled wird oder Laptop auf Batterie läuft
- Lüfter, laut und ineffizent, Laptop wird schon bei geringer Leistung sehr heisst
- Usb hub defekt
- Gehäuseschaden, hinten links, Streben von Kühler sind Purös
- Bison camera wird nicht unterstützt
OVERALL
- touchpad no linux support
- graphics (wont work with acpi enabled, solution is to unplug power supply)
- cooler are loud and wont cool
- defective usb hub
- broken ripps @ cooler (left side)
- no support for bison cam
Meine Frage ist wie ich weiter vorgehen soll.

Which translates into something like “Dear customer, we are sorry to inform you that the device will only function properly when running windows”.
Not only that they are not even able to write one sentence without mistakes (windwos istead of windows), they did not even consider and try to give a better answer to my not Linux related questions. It seems that Linux users apparently are second class citizens, when it comes to Asus support. I bet that they did not even bother reading the rest of my email after they saw that I am using Linux. Well I called the support hotline and found out that asus supporters are instructed to “ignore” Linux support questions, nice company, really. I will now boycott this pos company, I have actually ordered an Asus mainboard to replace the one located in my server, but I will cancel that order and try to get hold of another board. As said before, you should not buy an Asus notebook if you plan on using an other OS than windows, spend the money on something that is worth it.
